💰BA Startups Rack Up $2.7B+ ⚒️ INFRA Challenge: Building for an Exponential Future ⚒️ New Events Announced 🍸🍸🍸

The AI Infra Challenge: Building for an Exponential Future

As AI continues its remarkable advancement, a startling economic trend is emerging: as Sam Altman mentioned on his blog, the cost to use AI is plummeting by roughly 10x every 12 months. This unprecedented rate of cost reduction – far outpacing Moore's Law's traditional 2x improvement every 18 months – is setting the stage for an explosion in AI usage that our current infrastructure may be woefully unprepared to handle.

The scale of the challenge becomes clear when we consider what happens when technology becomes dramatically cheaper: usage skyrockets. When cloud computing costs fell, we didn't just see a linear increase in cloud usage – we witnessed an explosion of new applications, services, and entire business models that previously weren't economically viable. The same pattern is emerging with AI, but at an even more aggressive pace.

The current AI boom is already straining our computing resources. Major AI companies are facing long GPU lead times, data center capacity limits, and power consumption challenges. As models become more sophisticated and deployment more widespread, these pressures will only intensify. Consider the infrastructure needed to support what we envision as "virtual co-workers" wave – AI agents capable of performing complex knowledge work at scale. The prospect of millions of these AI agents operating simultaneously would require computing resources that dwarf our current capacity.

Power infrastructure is the crucial bottleneck. While individual model inference is becoming more efficient, the sheer volume of AI usage means overall power consumption will likely increase dramatically. Modern AI data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity, with some facilities requiring hundreds of megawatts – equivalent to powering tens of thousands of homes. Many existing data centers are already pushing the limits of local power grids.

Cooling systems must evolve. With increased computing density comes greater cooling challenges. Traditional air-cooling systems may not be sufficient for the next generation of AI data centers. We're likely to see more investment in liquid cooling technologies and possibly even radical approaches like immersion cooling or building data centers underwater or in arctic regions.

The real challenge lies in the timing. Infrastructure takes years to plan and build, while AI cost reductions and subsequent usage increases are happening at a much faster pace. This mismatch could lead to serious bottlenecks that constrain AI adoption and innovation. Smart infrastructure planning will be crucial. Rather than building for current needs, organizations need to plan for usage levels that may seem unrealistic by today's standards.

💵Bay Area Startups Secured Over $2.7B

Activity and megadeals were up this week; it was an AI infrastructure and legal week, followed by fintech and biotech. The largest deal this week was a $1.6B round to Groq, funded by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Also in AI infrastructure was Encharge AI (advanced AI compute solutions), Positron AI (redefining AI hardware with its advanced inference systems) and fal (cutting-edge inference solutions for AI-powered video, image, and audio applications).

There's a resurgence of activity in fintech, with Mercury, Plaid and Stripe all in various stages of fundraising, per The Information. Word is that Mercury is raising hundreds of millions at a $3B valuation - which would be almost double their $120M Series B valuation of $1.6B in 2021. Plaid is working with Goldman Sachs on a $300M -$400 secondary to provide liquidity to early investors and employees, while Stripe - which completed a $6.5B secondary offering at a $65B valuation almost a year ago - is also now looking at a new secondary offering at an $85B valuation. Their peak valuation was $95B in 2021.
