AI is Reshaping RetailāAnd Fast
The event kicked off with a compelling keynote from Greg Merrill, who drove home the key expectation of modern consumers: retailers need to know them, anticipate their needs, and deliver with unprecedented speed. AI is no longer a futuristic concept; itās the driving force behind hyper-personalized shopping experiences, real-time supply chain optimizations, and fully automated retail ecosystems.

Greg Merrill frames the session with a human-centered design approach to AI
Our panel discussion featuring Lisa Yu, Billy Zajac, Ryan Schonfeld, and Sarah Zurell took that theme even further. AI isnāt just about replacing tasksāitās fundamentally reshaping business models. From AI-powered loss prevention to predictive inventory, we heard firsthand how brands shift from data-driven insights to fully automated AI-powered decision-making.

One of the most unexpected yet interesting insights of the night came from Metta World Peace during his conversation with Alexandra Rossi and Henry Park. The way he broke down Phil Jacksonās Triangle Offense as a model for AI-driven business strategy was next level. Just like in basketball, successful AI adoption isnāt just about having the right dataāitās about positioning, flow, and execution.

šµBay Area Startups Secured Over $970M
This was a week for biotech and applications with just a single megadeal, $350B to biotech Eikon Therapeutics. The week's $970 in fundings takes February-to-date to $6.5B - $2B more than February 2024. But February fundings are still coming in so we won't have the final number until early next week. If you're interested in checking out the full breakdown for February, join us on Friday, March 7 for the latest edition of SV Tech, Talent, Capital & Trends ā more details and register here.
On exits: we're still waiting. There was a single IPO announcement this week - BridgeBio Oncology Therapeutics and they have chosen the SPAC route to get into the public markets. SPACs have traditionally not fared well and we don't expect that to change this year.
High valuations, low/no exits: Per Pitchbook, the continued lack of large exits now means that more than $4 trillion of market value is locked up in startups, more than double the 2020 $1.7 trillion market value. The high valuations of 2021-2022 continue to impact startups negatively, as companies come back to the market for new rounds - and lower valuations. In 2024, 25% of US venture rounds were down or flat, more than 2X the 2022 rate and the highest in a decade. More...
